Learning techniques when yarding Highlands

Thank you to the awesome foursome in photo,  who spent the day in the yards with us, eager to learn about Highlands and the procedures.  We hope you soon have some highlands of your own to enjoy!  Thank you for your kind words below!

Today in the yards

All the cattle were weighed and vaccinated for pestivirus and pink eye (fear we are heading for a bad season for flies with all the rain about)

With calving now finished, all the new calves had their first 7 in 1 vaccine, DNA hair samples taken, identification ear tags inserted and the bull calves were castrated.  Each calf yarded with its mother to cause the least amount of stress for both.

Five steers had their final weigh in and NLIS tag inserted to leave the property for the butcher, weighing in between 500-565 kilos.

We first made contact with Clive and Kay through their website as we were looking to learn as much as we could prior to taking on the responsibility of owning and breeding Highland Cattle on our own parcel of land.  From the get go the response we received was so welcoming and accommodating, Clive and Kay invited us to their property to view their farm and ask the questions we had about best practices - I'm not sure Clive knew what a barrage he would be opening himself up to, but he patiently answered our many questions and provided us with information in areas we hadn't even thought of.  We have visited the farm twice, the second trip we stayed at Ennerdale .  The property is absolutely spectacular and very difficult to leave.  Clive and Kay are two of the most genuine and wonderful people you could hope to meet.  We have gained insight and hands on experience which is invaluable to us on our journey.  We look forward to our next visit to Ennerdale. Thank you for having us to your beautiful property. From your welcoming hospitality and pristine accommodation, we were amazed at every turn!  Loved the country breakfast and very cute highland cows!  Your willingness to share your knowledge is outstanding.  All the information given to us was engaging, every question answered in detail.  The depth of experience shows with your breeding program and the passion to ensure quality and integrity of this breed.   The love and care you have for your animals touched my heart, you treat them like your family.  We will tell everybody about the inviting and grounded people that opened their home and farm to us we are very grateful to have had the opportunity of this experience.  Thank you J & N
