Artificial Insemination Highland Cattle

Artificial Insemination (AI) is a very important tool we use at the Ennerdale Fold, as we thrive to continually improve the genetics of the herd.  We use only the best available of Scottish Bulls, whom we have personally inspected and subsequently been imported.  We have even collected imported bulls from Scotland ourselves over the years. We only use Scottish genetics to keep the herd traditional and pure. We recently synchronised all the Ennerdale  breeders up to perform a long day of AI, during this we had the opportunity to add AI knowledge and we had a great student in Nathalie.  Nathalie recently purchased some Highland cattle of her own and her aim is to improve her own herd using AI as the foundation.  At Ennerdale we have learnt the benefits of AI, even if the process can be frustrating at times when cattle don't take.  We are not 100% sure of our success rate yet, but have our fingers crossed.  AI involves many elements and they all have to synchronise up on the day for it to work.  At Ennerdale we have been AI ing the cattle since we bought our first cow 20 years ago.  "If at first you don't succeed try and try again!" Nathalie certainly was a great student and she said she found the day in the yards very informative as well as hands on.  We must admit, we were thrilled at how well she learnt the technique.
